Why study with me?

There are many great professional flutists out there so why study with me?  Because I am a teacher first and foremost.  I love performing but my passion and my strength is teaching.  Not all great performers are great teachers.  Just because someone plays well doesn’t mean that they can describe their approach to others in a logical and meaningful way.

I am a trained music teacher.  I have a BA in music education and a MM in performance.  My knowledge of flute pedagogy has been tested and honed during my thirty years of teaching flute.  I have worked with students of all ages from small children to adults and I have taught flute at all levels from elementary through college.

Playing the flute didn’t come naturally to me.   I had to work hard to attain the skill level that I have accomplished.  Because I struggled, I had to give great thought to the “how” and “why” something was working or not working.  I needed several explanations, descriptions, and approaches to the various fundamentals of flute playing.  As a result, I now have many more tools to use in my teaching!

What is unique to my teaching approach?

I believe that playing music is a life-long journey. I strive to empower students to take responsibility for their own learning and development and to guide students to become self-reliant, reflective, and proactive in their growth, rather than relying solely on external instruction. My goal is to equip them with the tools, strategies, and a mindset to assess their progress, recognize areas for improvement, and find solutions independently.

It’s about teaching flutists how to set goals, break down complex tasks, troubleshoot challenges, and use resources (like practice techniques, recordings, or feedback) to advance on their own.

In the long term, this leads to greater autonomy, confidence, and satisfaction in their musical journey.
